My Story

Doors don't always open just because you knock.

Chapter The Knock
Ridgeland, South Carolina

Where it started

I grew up in Ridgeland, South Carolina, a small rural town where limited resources and an underperforming school system meant I didn't have access to doors others knew existed and walked through freely. What I couldn't see, I couldn't reach for. That reality shaped how I approach my work today.

2015

I knocked. No one answered.

In 2015, I knocked. I reached out to a local publication to publish my poetry. I hoped someone would see what I saw in my work. No one answered. Not a rejection. Not even a "thanks, but no thanks." Just silence on the other side of a door that never opened.

That silence told me everything. I was standing outside waiting for someone to let me in, handing my voice to strangers and asking them to decide if it was worthy of being heard.

Rejoicing Hope Magazine

So I stopped knocking.

I built my own door. And I walked through it. In 2015, Rejoicing Hope Magazine launched as proof that when the industry doesn't respond, you can still say yes to yourself.

First in my family

From waiting for access to creating it

I became the first person in my family to stop waiting for access and start creating it, then I stepped into what I built. That decision became the foundation of how I lead: when a door won't open, I use creativity, relationships, and resourcefulness to build one. And then I walk through it and invite others in.

Publishing · Community · Mentorship · Leadership

Opening doors for others

Over time, my work expanded beyond publishing into community support, mentorship, and women's leadership. Across these different spaces, I've remained committed to helping people find their voice, access resources, build the doors they need for their future, and walk through them with confidence.

When you open doors for others and teach them to build their own, you're not just creating access; you're building legacy.

Sequoia Gillyard has the heart of a mafia mafioso! Ok. Wait. Let me explain.

I’m the founder of Move-In Day Mafia, a registered nonprofit that provides decked-out dorm rooms and four years of ongoing support to HBCU students who have aged out of foster care, experienced housing insecurity, or are navigating college largely on their own.

And Sequoia? She’s one of those rare people who can make things happen in the boardroom AND roll up her sleeves to get things done on the ground!

For years, Best Buy was one of my dream corporate partners. What I didn’t know was that Sequoia had been working behind the scenes to help make that partnership a reality. She saw an opportunity to connect resources with a mission she believed in, and she quietly went to work. Eventually, that dream partnership became a reality, and her efforts helped open doors that have made a meaningful difference for our scholars.

But here’s what makes Sequoia especially remarkable. She doesn’t just help bring resources to the table. She shows up to do the work!

During our move-in season, she’s been rock solid. She loves to drive, which is a tremendous gift when we’re coordinating move-ins, deliveries, and volunteers. She’s willing to haul boxes, help set up dorm rooms, mobilize people, and jump into whatever needs doing. She doesn’t need a title, a spotlight, or a perfectly defined role. If there’s a need, she’s ready to help meet it.

And this work is personal to her. Having experienced financial barriers during her own college journey, Sequoia understands how much it matters for a student to have someone in their corner. She has taken that understanding and turned it into action.

That’s what I call having a mafia heart. Sequoia combines strategic thinking with genuine compassion and an extraordinary willingness to serve. She builds relationships, recognizes opportunities, follows through on commitments, and never loses sight of the people those efforts are meant to benefit.

I’ve worked with a lot of people over the years, and I can tell you that someone who can both open doors AND carry boxes through them is someone you want on your team! I’m grateful for everything Sequoia has contributed to Move-In Day Mafia, and I wholeheartedly recommend her for opportunities that recognize and cultivate leaders who turn their commitment to service into meaningful action.

I met Sequoia when I was finishing up high school, trying to figure out what path I wanted to take and needing real insight into how to reach my goals. As a first-generation Haitian American, I needed support navigating college and my career aspirations — and I didn’t have anyone who understood that journey until I met her.

Sequoia was always there with life wisdom and genuine advice when I needed it most. Whether I was struggling with time management and overwhelming myself academically, or simply nervous about stepping into my first corporate internship, she showed up.

Now, with three Amazon internships secured, I look back and realize how much her belief in me shaped where I am today. I’m forever grateful for her mentorship and so glad our paths crossed when they did.

03 Building doors at the systems level

Currently building The Unmuted Leader, an initiative designed to solve one of the most expensive invisible problems in corporate culture: the self-silencing of talented women leaders.

But here's what makes this different from every other corporate initiative out there — we're not just empowering women to speak up in broken systems. We're changing the systems that made them go silent in the first place.

For years, I watched talented women shrink in corporate spaces. And I watched companies lose millions in innovation, retention, and leadership potential because cultural norms causing women to self-silence are perpetuated instead of eliminated.

Here's what's really happening

Talented women are stuck in a trap they didn't create. The very behaviors that signal leadership potential get weaponized against them — while these same behaviors are celebrated in others as strategic thinking and strong leadership.

Gets labeled as"Not being a team player"Same behavior. Different penalty.
Leadership signalChallenging ideasHover or tap to flip
Gets labeled as"Difficult to work with"Same behavior. Different penalty.

And then companies invest in development programs for women — as if the problem is a skills gap instead of a culture that penalizes them for showing up fully.

It's not a development issue.
It's a culture issue.

Professional Experience

Turning ideas into impact

My career lives at the intersection of marketing, communication, and building connections that matter. I've worked in digital advertising, customer lifecycle marketing, and client management, but what drives me is understanding what moves people, translating business goals into strategies that actually work, and bringing ideas to life through collaboration.

Marketing Strategy & Audience Engagement

At Best Buy, I worked across the full customer journey, including paid search, omnichannel advertising, and lifecycle email marketing. I combined audience insights, creative messaging, and performance data to help campaigns reach the right people and hit business objectives. Through testing and optimization, I contributed to an 18% increase in email engagement and a 15% improvement in return on ad spend. But beyond the numbers, I learned how to speak to diverse audiences in ways that resonated.

Client Partnerships & Strategic Execution

Managing relationships with 20+ enterprise accounts taught me how to connect business needs with creative and media solutions that actually deliver. I translated objectives into actionable campaign briefs, facilitated collaboration across teams, and improved project turnaround time by 20% through more efficient workflows. These experiences showed me how to align people around a shared goal and move complex projects forward even when the path wasn't clear.

Communication, Creativity & Inclusive Storytelling

My marketing work reinforced what I already believed: understanding your audience and communicating with intention matters. Through brand marketing initiatives and serving on Best Buy's Marketing Review Council, I contributed to conversations about cultural sensitivity, representation, and brand impact. I evaluated campaign scripts, casting, and visuals to ensure we weren't just reaching diverse audiences; we were actually seeing them. I bring that same commitment to purposeful communication into my work creating platforms that amplify voices and connect people with possibilities they didn't know were available.

Messages don't just inform. They open doors.

My background in communication studies and journalism shaped how I think about storytelling, audience engagement, and how ideas move through the world. It taught me that messages don't just inform; they influence understanding, create connection, and bring attention to perspectives that might otherwise go unheard.

As a member of Lambda Pi Eta, the National Communication Association's honor society, I connected with a community centered on the study and practice of communication as a tool for change.

Today, I bring this foundation into everything I do — marketing, media, mentorship, community initiatives. I use communication not just to share information, but to build connections and create opportunities for action.

Because I believe the right message, delivered to the right person at the right time, can open doors that seemed permanently closed.

Words as tools for transformation

Faith · Identity · Courage
Three books authored

Author & Creative Voice

I've authored three books that explore faith, identity, and the courage it takes to step into who you're called to be: Pillars of Hope, Notes to Younger Women, and The Woman Behind the Mask: Unmasking Your Authentic Self. Writing has always been my way of processing what I see in the world and offering language for experiences that often go unspoken. Through my books, I create space for people to see themselves, question what they've been told, and imagine what's possible when they stop playing small.

My work as an author isn't separate from my marketing and leadership work; it's the foundation. Writing taught me how to distill complex ideas into clear messages, how to speak to people's hearts, and how to use words as tools for transformation.

On stage

Spoken Word Artist

As a spoken word artist, I bring words off the page and into the room. I perform pieces that challenge, encourage, and invite people to think differently about faith, identity, and what it means to lead authentically. Spoken word taught me the power of presence, the importance of delivery, and how the same message can land completely differently depending on how it's shared.

This art form shapes how I approach all communication. Whether I'm writing a campaign brief, developing a framework, or speaking to a room, I understand that it's not just what you say;

it's how you make people feel when you say it.
